On a sailing boat, electrical energy is limited. Anyone who wants to remain self-sufficient for a long time must therefore use it sparingly. The refrigerator is the appliance with the highest power consumption, especially older models. Instead of adding extra insulation material around the outside of the refrigerator, the inside can be lined with self-adhesive aluminium foil. The approximately 0.100 millimetre thick aluminium layer is highly resistant and, by reflecting thermal radiation, can contribute to providing additional thermal shielding for the refrigerator.
Article from the sailing magazine “Palstek 6/09”:
Everyone is familiar with the principle of a thermos flask, which can keep not only hot drinks warm for a long time, but also cold drinks cool. To reduce power consumption effectively, a refrigerator could additionally be insulated on the outside or replaced with a newer, more energy-efficient model. An effective alternative, however, is to line the existing refrigerator with self-adhesive aluminium foil, for example 0.1 millimetres thick.
Aluminium has a high reflectivity for thermal radiation. Wherever cold needs to be kept separate from heat, aluminium foil or aluminised plastic films are used, for example in outdoor sleeping bags, emergency blankets for injured persons, in aerospace applications, or as heat protection behind cookers or heating systems.
The refrigerator on my boat (in the Mediterranean) has been lined with aluminium on the inside since the beginning of 2008. The foil is available from Korff AG.
