Questions about Aluminium

Welcome to the FAQ section of Korff AG – your specialist for customized aluminium foil solutions in Switzerland.

Here you’ll find answers to frequently asked questions about the production, applications, sustainability and resource use of aluminium foils. The responses are tailored for buyers, technicians and end users – and offer insight into Korff AG’s expertise as a processor and converter of aluminium.

How is aluminium foil produced?

Aluminium foil is created in a multi-step rolling process from industrially produced aluminium. Liquid aluminium is cast into large blocks and rolled in several stages to form increasingly thinner strips. Extremely thin foils are produced using a double-rolling method, resulting in a flexible, tear-resistant and light-impermeable material suitable for many uses.

Korff AG further processes these semi-finished goods into premium rolls, sheets and custom formats.

What does it mean that Korff is a converter?

As a converter, Korff AG refines aluminium foil sourced from selected rolling mills. We cut, laminate, emboss or print foil according to specific client needs – for example, as label blanks, laminated composites or printed packaging materials.

Our extensive inventory of aluminium foils in various thicknesses and widths allows for rapid, flexible delivery.

Where is aluminium foil used?

Korff aluminium foils are used in many fields:

  • Packaging: Ideal for chocolate, butter, cheese, tablets or dried foods.
  • Construction: Aluminium foils are used as vapour barriers, radon shields and insulation layers in various building applications.
  • Medical and laboratory: Serve as hygienic covers, seals or sample wraps.
  • Technical and craft sectors: From salon foil to reflectors and decorative applications.

Korff in Switzerland offers proven foil solutions for each of these fields.

Why does aluminium foil have a shiny and a dull side?

This is due to the double-rolling process: two sheets are rolled together. The sides in contact with the rollers become shiny, while the inner sides remain matte.

Both sides have identical technical properties. With Korff products, this distinction is mostly visual unless a specific coating or print is applied to one side.

Can aluminium foil be recycled?

Aluminium is generally well suited for recycling, provided that the material can be collected, sorted and directed to an appropriate recycling process.

Pure aluminium foil can generally be recycled as a material. In the case of coated, printed or laminated aluminium foils, recyclability depends on the specific product composition and the available recycling processes.

What raw material is used for aluminium foil?

The base material is aluminium, which is industrially extracted from bauxite. After chemical refinement, aluminium oxide is obtained and then transformed into pure aluminium through an electrolysis process. The resulting metal is rolled into strips and further processed into foil.

Korff AG does not produce raw aluminium but focuses on the further processing and conversion of aluminium foil.

What quality standards does Korff meet?

Korff AG is certified according to internationally recognized standards:

  • ISO 9001: Quality management
  • ISO 14001: Environmental management
  • BRCGS: Food safety
  • AEO-F: Customs and supply chain security

The certifications document compliance with defined requirements in the areas of quality management, environmental management, food safety, and customs and supply chain security.
